Gaming Write For Us – With the rise of video games, smartphones and new technologies, current generations have lost the habit of playing traditional games, both among themselves and with their parents. However, while new forms of entertainment have some advantages, they often have fewer benefits than the diversions enjoyed by children in decades past.

Traditional games are a great way to foster social relationships, improve wits and intellect, stay active, and generally grow and develop in a proper way. Therefore, in this article we bring you a list of some of these forms of entertainment, so that you can teach them to your children and enjoy them with them.

We continue to develop these types of games in our summer camps and children’s entertainment ; The objective to encourage interaction between all the kids with activities different from those they are used to on a day-to-day basis.

1- The handkerchief

One of the best-known traditional team games is the handkerchief. In it, two groups with the same number of children face each other, assigning each of them a number. Each player is paired with the player from the opposing team who has the same figure as him.

The teams stand at opposite ends of a field, with a “judge” or extra player in the middle. He will be holding a handkerchief, and in each round he will have to call out one of the numbers. The players of each team that have been assigned that number must run to the judge and try to get the handkerchief. The first one to capture him will have to run to where his team is, while the other tries to catch him before he does.

If the player with the handkerchief succeeds to leave it at his base before the other touches him, his team wins a point; otherwise, the rival team scores the goal. The game ends when all the numbers have been named, and the winning group is the one with the most points.

2- Sack race

This game is played in a group, but each child competes individually. It has to be done on a smooth track without obstacles, preferably on soft ground since most of the time there are some falls.

The children have to put their feet inside a sack, which they hold with their hands; and jumping, they will have to compete to reach the finish line first. At all times, they must stay inside the bag, so moving at high speed can be very difficult and cause laughter from the players.

It is a very beneficial game for health, since it forces the participants to exercise in an easy and fun way. In addition, it can improve children’s coordination and movement ability.

3- The chairs

This game is one of the best to play at birthday parties or similar events where there are many participants. The mechanics are very simple: as many chairs are placed in a circle as there are children playing minus one, putting all the backs inwards.

The participants are placed around the chairs, while an outside person puts music on a player. While the music is playing, the children must go around the circle; but as soon as it stops, they have to sit down as quickly as possible. Whoever is left without a seat is eliminated.

At the end of each round, a chair is removed so that the number of chairs is always less than the number of participants. The victor of the game is the one who manages to win the last round.

4- Dodgeball

This game is one of the stars of most physical education classes, but it can be practiced in other contexts. The mechanics is as follows: the children are divided into two teams, and each of them is placed in the middle of a previously delimited field. Each of the groups chooses one of its players (called a “delegate”), who will be placed behind the opposing team.

Using a single ball, the participants have to manage to capture it and hit one of the players of the opposing team with it. When a child is hit, he will also go behind the opposing team where his delegate is. Participants who are in this area can also try to capture the ball and eliminate enemy players.

The object of the game is to disregard the entire opposing team in this way. Matches tend to be very intense, and are a great way to get kids exercising in a fun way.

5- Tulip

This game is a version of the traditional “catch – catch”, but with an extra element that makes it more fun for the little ones. Before starting a game, a child is chosen to “link” it; that is, he will have to capture the rest of the participants.

The others have to manage to escape whoever binds them. To do this, his main weapon is to run; but when they see him very close, they can also shout “tulip” and stand still with their legs open and their arms outstretched. When in this position, they cannot be captured. However, until a teammate passes under their legs, they cannot move and are considered out of play.

The game ends either when all players have been captured, or when there are none left playing who are not in “tulip”. It is a game that encourages collaboration among children in a fun and entertaining way.

6- The hiding place

Hide and seek is one of the simplest games that exist but, at the same time, one of the ones that children like the most. In it, one of the participants has to count to a certain number with their eyes closed, while all the others look for a place to hide.

When the leaguer reaches the previously agreed number, he warns the others that he is going to look for them and goes out to capture them. When he finds one of the other participants, he has to tap on them to remove them and continue his search.

The game ends either when the leaguer has managed to eliminate all the other children, or when one of these has managed to reach the base (the place where the seeker had been counting with his eyes closed) without being captured. .

7- Jump rope

This game is one of the simplest to practice that exists but, at the same time, it is also one of the favorites of children. The premise is very simple: while two participants spin a rope, another has to jump on it to the rhythm of the song.

The interesting thing about this traditional game for children is that there are many variants: with several players jumping at the same time, with several ropes, alone… The important thing is that all of them are an extraordinary physical exercise, which helps children stay healthy. and fit while having a good time.

8- The rope

This game is one of the rare that many adults still play, as it is very popular at traditional festivals. Dividing the participants into two teams, each of them grabs one end of a rope, leaving a space between the two groups.

Before starting, a mark is made on the ground. The objective of each team is to pull the rope so hard that they manage to make the players of the opposing group pass over this line. The first team to do so wins and gets a point.

It is an excellent game to improve children’s strength and team skills, since shooting alone it is impossible to beat the opponents. However, it must taken into version that the groups must be balanced in terms of age, size and height.

9- The English hideout

Who has not ever played English hide-and-seek? It is a very simple pastime to do, but one that the little ones usually like a lot. Its mechanics is very simple: a “guardian” is chosen from among all the participants, who will have to face a wall and sing the following out loud: “One, two, three, to the English hideout, without moving the hands nor feet.”

The rest of the players have to advance little by little until the wall where the guardian is located; but when he finishes singing his phrase, he will turn around. If he sees any of the other participants moving, he sends them back to the start, thus losing everything they had already advanced.

The object of the game is to be the first to touch the wall. Once one of the children gets it, he becomes the new guardian and the game starts over.

10- The mouse and the cat

This game is ideal for large groups of children. Among all the participants, one chosen to pick her up (the cat) and another who will have to escape from him (the mouse). The rest of the players will stand in a circle holding hands, facing the interior of it.

The children who are part of the circle, while the game takes place, will sing the following song:

“Mouse that the cat catches you, mouse that is going to catch you, if it does not catch you tonight, tomorrow it will catch you.”

While this is happening, the mouse has to go in and out of the circle of children under their clasped hands. The cat has to try to catch him; but the rest of the participants can block the way by lowering their arms. When the leaguer manages to catch his opponent, the roles will reversed: the cat will become the mouse, and another child in the circle will play the cat.

11- Board games

What about rainy days, or when it’s too cold to go outside? Luckily, while most traditional games are played outdoors, there are some home alternatives that can be just as fun: board games.

That said, thanks to the large number of different games that exist, we can always find one that suits the needs of each child. Among the simplest and suitable for all audiences are the following:

  • What about one of the best-known games of all time? The objective is to move four pieces around a board until you get them “home” before our opponents do. It is a simple but fun pastime, perfect to play with both the little ones and people of any age.
  • The goose. Another of the classics in the world of board games. The goal is to get our piece to the end of the board, with a multitude of special squares along the way that will make the game more entertaining.
  • Sink the fleet. It is a perfect game to develop spatial vision while children have fun. The goal is to find all of your opponent’s “ships” on a board before he guesses where ours are.

We hope you liked our list of traditional and popular games for children. Of course, there many more, but with these you guaranteed many hours of fun with the little ones.
